Artist Marinus (Mark) Boekelman

The FACE to FACE exhibition features forty six portraits of Men’s hostel patrons, Table Food Bank guests, and Volunteers from the Table Soup Kitchen Foundation. The portraits were mainly painted on site at the Table for over a decade. Mark portraits are not “Pretty pictures.” Instead of presenting subjects that are “sitting pretty” these works capture the vulnerability of marginalized individuals.

The portraits of the Volunteers is a small representation of the numerous people who dedicate countless hours of time and energy to make a difference in the lives of the people of Huntsville who need it most. They should be applauded.

FACE TO FACE — Opening Reception

Join us at The Table Art Gallery & Hub for the opening reception of FACE TO FACE, featuring the powerful portraits of Marinus (Mark) Boekelman.

Now 83, Mark brings a lifetime of global perspective to his work. Originally from Amsterdam, he came to Canada in 1963 and later discovered painting in South Korea. His expressionist portraits are deeply inspired by Alice Neel’s “people first” philosophy and the German Expressionists of the 1920s.

This special exhibition features 46 portraits of Table guests, Men’s Hostel residents and volunteers, many painted on site at The Table over more than a decade.

These are not simply portraits—they are stories of people who deserve to be seen, heard and recognized.
