FOOD FOR THOUGHT: NEW COMMUNITY ART EXHIBITION EXPLORES OUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FOOD
Food is a necessity. We need it to survive. Yet not everyone has the same access to this most basic of needs.
This is the idea at the heart of Food for Thought, a new community group art exhibition at The Table Art Gallery & Hub in Huntsville. Bringing together artists and perspectives from across the community, the exhibition invites us to consider the many ways food shapes our lives—and what it means when access to food is not equal.
Food for Thought opens with a warm community reception on Wednesday, October 7, from 5–7 p.m., and continues through October 21st at The Table Art Gallery & Hub.
Come to The Table
As families and friends gather around the table this Thanksgiving and celebrate the harvest, The Table Art Gallery & Hub warmly invites families, friends and community members to come together and experience food through the eyes of artists.
Bring the family, bring a friend, or simply stop in and take some time to look, reflect and connect. Through a diverse range of artwork and artistic perspectives, Food for Thought explores food as nourishment, tradition, memory, culture, celebration and community—while also inviting us to consider the reality that not everyone has reliable access to enough nutritious food.
Food can be something we share around a family table. It can evoke memories of childhood, connect us to our culture or bring a community together. But for others, the question may simply be whether there will be enough food for the next meal.
The exhibition creates space for these different experiences and perspectives.
What does food mean to you? What does it mean when someone cannot reliably access enough food? And how does food connect us to one another?
These are some of the questions at the heart of Food for Thought.
Art as a way to start a conversation
The exhibition is a community group art show, bringing together artists working in different media and with diverse perspectives. Rather than presenting a single interpretation of food, the exhibition creates a shared space for artists to explore what food means to them and to invite visitors into the conversation.
“Food is something we all need, but we don't all experience it in the same way,” says Carolyne Wagland, Communications Manager at The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation. “Food for Thought gives artists an opportunity to explore that reality through their own experiences and perspectives, while inviting the community to stop, look and think about something that is fundamental to all of us.”
The exhibition reflects The Table Soup Kitchen Foundation’s broader commitment to addressing hunger and creating a community where people have access to food, care and connection.
Artwork in the exhibition will be available for purchase, providing an opportunity for visitors to support participating artists while also supporting The Table’s community work.
